Manitoba Agriculture fosters the sustainable growth of Manitoba producers and agri-processors through innovative, reliable supports and services. Within the department, the Animal Health and Welfare branch provides several services and programs to protect animals, food and people with the technical support and expertise of the Animal Health and Welfare Team.

Veterinary Diagnostic Services (VDS) is a critical part of the department’s infrastructure, providing diagnostic service to veterinarians across the province. VDS is also essential for the regulatory work of the Animal Health and Welfare branch. The position is part of the accessioning team that receives cases from veterinary clinics and branch program areas, conduct the baseline technical and biosafety work in the postmortem room and process and prepare samples for further testing.

Conditions of Employment:
• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
• Must be willing to work overtime, evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
• Must be willing to work in abattoirs, where working conditions can be noisy, cool and damp.
• Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment.
• Must be willing and able to work with animals both pre and postmortem.
• Must possess and maintain a Certification as a Registered Veterinary Technologist.
• Must be able to perform the job duties including but not limited to lifting a minimum of 15 Kg.

Qualifications:
Essential:
• Certified Registered Veterinary Technologist, or an equivalent combination of education and experience related to animal science.
• Experience with animal health laboratory procedures including working with biological samples.
• Experience assisting with necropsies including preparation of equipment, euthanasia of animals, inspecting and organizing animal remains, maintaining equipment and harvesting tissues independently or under supervision.
• A high degree of dexterity to operate potentially dangerous equipment.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interact with tact and diplomacy with a variety of stakeholders.
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to successfully coordinate sample submissions while managing multiple records and deadlines.
• Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to deliver information to veterinary professional and other clients.
• Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.

Desired:
• Experience preparing and fixing tissues including the maintenance of cassette printer and shaker.

Duties:
The Registered Veterinary Technologist works as part of a team assisting the duty veterinary pathologist in the pathology section. The section receives biological material from a variety of clients: veterinarians, producers, industry, other provincial and federal departments, and veterinary laboratories from other provinces. Data entry for samples received must be accurate to ensure traceability. Samples must be distributed and handled following safe practises and use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Duties in post-mortem will require the person to work independently with minimal supervision. The candidate must be comfortable with euthanasia, necropsies, carcass disposal and use and maintenance of equipment including, but not limited to, hoists, knives and saws.
